Detroit welcomed David Legwand for his debut game as a Red Wing, after Nicklas Lidstrom’s No. 5 jersey was sent to the rafters of the Joe Louis Arena on March 6.
In a press conference held in the Red Wings’ locker room on March 5, former Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom talked about his upcoming jersey retirement ceremony, and Red Wings manager Ken Holland talked about injuries that have effected the recent trade deadline decision.
“He’s good defensively, he’s a guy that puts up fifty to sixty points, he’s an established legitimate NHL player and can kill penalties,” said Holland, when asked about the Red Wings’ newly drafted center iceman David Legwand.
Holland said they needed to fill a spot down the middle, and the guy recently drafted (Legwand) will be their number one center iceman.
Although the Red Wings have been experiencing many injuries throughout the season Holland said that if they can get a few of the injured players back they could play their way to the playoffs.
Holland said once you are in the playoffs it is like a brand new season, therefore the Wings do have a chance to win the Stanley Cup again this year.
Lidstrom said he is more than honored to have his name alongside his previous teammates such as, Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Terry Sawchuk, and even Steve Yzerman up in the rafters of the Joe Louis.
The Red Wings do have a chance to make it into the playoffs this year, said Lidstrom, but with so many injuries they need to work very hard.
